This historic Victorian-era property relies upon extensive research of specimens that were popular during the mid-nineteenth century. The house and garden restoration follows strict preservation guidelines, and includes a stone wall typical of the period. Traditional arborviate (Thuja occidentalis) are highlighted in containers, and a boxwood hedge frames beds of hydrangeas, azaleas, camellias, jasmine, and gardenias. Zones of cutting roses and a kitchen garden flank a walking corridor where espaliered pear, apple, orange, and tiger fig trees create a sense of spaciousness while maximizing varieties and fruit production. The stone obelisk was found during the owner’s travels, echoing the Victorian penchant for exotic souvenirs from foreign lands. “The client was very pleased with the historical accuracy, and amazed we could bring in as many plants and varieties as we did,” says Trace. “I think of this project as an ode to old Santa Barbara, with a contemporary flair.”
